The meaning behind the name
You might wonder: why “My Poor Pet”?
It isn’t about pity. It’s about empathy—that tender, humbling moment when you realize your animal depends on you for everything… and the “perfect” advice isn’t always the right fit for your pet.
The story of the perfect bed (and the realization that followed)
mypoorpet.com didn’t start in a boardroom. It started on a kitchen floor at 2:00 AM, sitting next to a dog who refused to sleep.
When our founder first adopted their rescue, they did what every responsible pet parent tries to do: buy the best of everything. They read the manuals, followed the “textbook” training plan, and bought a top-rated orthopedic bed that seemed like the correct choice.
But the dog hated the bed.
Not just disliked it—he was scared of it.
Night after night, he paced and refused to settle. And when he finally did rest, he chose the cold tiles over the expensive foam.
For weeks, the founder tried to force the “right” solution. The experts say it’s good for his joints, they kept thinking. But one night, watching the dog circle anxiously and then lie down on the floor again, the founder sighed and whispered:
“Oh, my poor pet. I’m trying so hard to do it right, that I’m making you miserable.”
That was the lightbulb moment.
From “perfect” to listening
Most of us have said it at some point:
- My poor pet… I didn’t realize you were allergic to that food.
- My poor pet… I didn’t know that training method scared you.
- My poor pet… I thought this was helping, but it’s not.
And that’s the real meaning of the name: the moment you stop chasing perfection from a checklist and start becoming a listening pet parent—paying attention to the animal in front of you, not the generic idea of what “should” work.
Turning guilt into guidance (community helps)
We created mypoorpet.com to capture the parts of pet life that textbooks often skip: the nuance, the quirks, the context, and the “I wish I knew this earlier” moments.
Veterinarians save lives. But a thoughtful community of pet parents can save our sanity—and sometimes help us notice the small things that change everything.
That’s why this is a community-driven space. We share stories, lessons learned, and practical care insights so that when someone else is awake at 2:00 AM wondering what they’re doing wrong, they feel a little less alone—and a lot more capable.
